Hadoop is a framework for distributed storage and parallel processing of large volumes of data (“big data”) in horizontally distributed environments. Horizontal scaling (“scale out”) is one of the basic principles of Hadoop. This makes it possible to distribute big data reliably and with a great degree of error tolerance among several thousand servers within a cluster.
Low-cost “commodity hardware” is used for this purpose instead of expensive special servers (“scale up”). In addition to the storage of big data, another core task of Hadoop lies in the distributed and parallel processing of this data. In the big data environment, Hadoop is regarded as being the de facto standard for big data applications.
